How it lands
What it does well
A joke keeps things light, and friends who know your humor usually get it.
Where it trips
In a text, a joke with an edge can land as just the edge, and the real point gets lost.
What one study found
In an online study, older adults missed sarcasm in written messages more often than younger adults did, and caught it more often when the message came with a winking 😉.
One thing to try
Porcupine · a tipSay the real thing first. Save the bit for after.
Instead ofOh sure, I’ll just do them all myself then.
TryCould you take the dishes tonight? I’ve done them all week. (Yes, I’m counting.)
If someone texts you like this
In a text, a joke has no voice to carry it, so sarcasm can read as meant, and a plain text can read as sarcastic. If you’re not sure, ask.
Look for the clues
Praise for something that went wrong, words that are a little too much, or a winking face often mark a joke.
Answer the real part
Under most sarcasm is a plain point: a plan that slipped, a long wait. Answer that.
Ask when it matters
“Are you teasing, or is it a real problem?” is easier to answer than a guess is to undo.
If they sayWow, only 40 minutes late. A new record.
Porcupine · a tipAnswer the plain point under the joke.
You could saySorry, that’s on me. Thanks for waiting.
What one study found
In two studies, when people had to make their meaning clear in writing, they marked sarcasm with a winking or tongue-out face, and used “…” more for criticism than for sarcasm.
Common questions
Why does sarcasm get lost over text?
There’s no voice, face or eye roll to show it’s a joke, so the reader gets only the words. The writer hears their own tone reading it back, so it seems obvious to them.
Is sarcasm over text rude?
Not by itself. Plenty of friends trade it all the time. But in a text the edge can arrive without the joke, so when it matters, say the real thing first.
How do I make sarcasm clear in a text?
A winking face helps some readers catch it. When it really matters, say the real thing plainly, then add the joke.
Am I sarcastic over text?
If your replies often joke with an edge, maybe. In the quiz, sarcasm shows up as one of your habits when you pick the sarcastic replies at least 3 times out of 12, whatever your style.
