Why a short reply can feel cold

A dry text is short and flat: one word, no question back, nothing that keeps the conversation going. Sometimes it means they’re not interested. Just as often they’re busy, tired, typing on the go, or text that way with everyone. A period after a one-word reply can make it read colder than they meant.

What one study found

In three experiments, one-word text replies read differently with a period. “Yeah.” seemed less sincere than “Yeah”, and replies like “Nope.” and “Maybe.” seemed more negative or less enthusiastic.

Texts that often read as dry

A few that get read the worst way, what else they could mean, and a question that lets the other person say.

Their reply to your plan for Fridayk.

  • They’re busy, and typing with one thumb.
  • That’s how they text, with everyone.
  • They’re annoyed, and keeping it short.

A question you could askGreat! Still good for 7?

Their whole reply to a long story you toldlol

  • They thought it was funny, and didn’t have much to add.
  • They’re busy, and will say more later.
  • They weren’t sure what to say.

A question you could askHa, it was a lot. How was your day?

Their reply to your good newsNice.

  • They’re happy for you, and keep texts short.
  • They’re busy, and meant to say more later.
  • Something else is on their mind.

A question you could askThanks! It’s been a big week. How are you doing?

Dry, or just how they text?

Some people text in paragraphs, others in single words, and neither says much about how they feel about you. The best clue is a change: if they used to write more and now don’t, that’s worth a light question. If you bring it up, say what you noticed, not what you think it means. “Your texts have been short lately. All good?” is easier to answer than “Why are you so dry?”

Common questions

What is a dry texter?

Someone whose texts are short and flat: one-word replies, few questions back, and little that shows feeling. It’s a way of texting, not a verdict on how they feel about you.

Does a dry text mean they’re not interested?

Not necessarily. Short replies often mean busy, tired or typing on the go, and some people text this way with everyone. If it’s new for them, a light question will tell you more than the words can.

Why does “k.” feel so cold?

A period after a one-word reply can make it read less sincere, even when it wasn’t meant that way.

What one study found

In an experiment, college students rated one-word text replies like “Okay” and “Sure” as less sincere when they ended with a period. The same replies in handwritten notes weren’t affected.

Gunraj, D. N., Drumm-Hewitt, A. M., Dashow, E. M., Upadhyay, S. S. N., & Klin, C. M. (2016). Texting insincerely: The role of the period in text messaging. Computers in Human Behavior, 55, 1067–1075.

Will it tell me if they’re losing interest?

No. It tells you how easily the words could read as dry, and which words do it. Only they know what’s behind them, so it also shows a few ways to read it, and a question that lets them tell you.
