Is this text flirty?

Why flirting is hard to read in a text

In person, flirting comes with a look, a smile and a tone. In a text, a winking face or a “haha” can mean flirting, friendliness or nothing much, and people use them very differently. It’s easy to read in what you’re hoping for, or what you’re afraid of.

Texts that could go either way

A few that could be flirting or not, what else they could mean, and a question that lets the other person say.

The text you gotYou’re trouble 😏

  • They’re flirting, and seeing if you flirt back.
  • They’re teasing, the way they do with friends.
  • They’re joking about something you did.

A question you could askHa, is that a compliment? 😄

Their text after you met at a partyWe should hang out sometime!

  • They’d like to see you, maybe as more than friends.
  • They’d like to be friends.
  • They’re being friendly, and haven’t thought about a plan yet.

A question you could askI’d like that! Are you free next weekend?

A text out of the blueGood morning ☀️

  • They were thinking about you.
  • They say good morning to lots of people.
  • They wanted to start a conversation.

A question you could askGood morning! What are you up to today?

Emoji do a lot of the work

The playful part of a flirty text is often an emoji: a wink, a smirk, a heart. But the same 😉 can be friendly from one person and flirting from another.

What one study found

In two surveys, people who used emoji with potential partners were more likely to keep in touch after a first date, and reported more romantic and sexual encounters in the past year. It’s a link, not proof that the emoji did it.

Not sure? Ask lightly

A light question beats guessing, and leaves them room to say. If you’d like it to be flirting, flirt back a little and see what they do with it. If you’d rather it wasn’t, a friendly, plain reply says so without making it awkward. Switch the box to “I’m sending it” to check yours before you send it.

Common questions

How can you tell if a text is flirty?

Often you can’t be sure from one text. Clues include compliments on how they look, teasing, a wink or smirk, and hints at spending time together. A pattern over time says more than one message.

Does a winking emoji mean they’re flirting?

Sometimes. It can also mean they’re joking or being friendly, and people often disagree about what the same emoji means.

What one study found

In a survey, people looking at the very same emoji disagreed about whether it was positive, neutral or negative about a quarter of the time, and more often when it was drawn differently on different phones.

Will it tell me if they like me?

No. It tells you how easily the words could read as flirty, and which words do it. Only they know how they meant them, so it also shows a few ways to read it, and a question that lets them tell you.

What if I don’t want to flirt back?

A friendly, plain reply that doesn’t flirt back usually says enough. If you need to say it outright, the guide on telling someone you’re not interested can help.
