How to tell your ex you don’t want to be friends
You can be kind and still say no. Here’s how to say it so it’s clear.
Be plain
A vague answer can sound like a maybe. If you mean no, say no.
Honest and hearable ›What you might want to sayMaybe at some point? I just need some time I guess, idk.
Porcupine · Observation, feeling, need, request“Maybe at some point? idk” leaves open a door you mean to close. “I don’t want to stay friends” closes it gently.
What might land betterI don’t want to stay friends. I need some distance, and I’d rather be honest than leave you waiting.
Keep the reason short
If it helps, say why in a sentence, such as needing room to move on. You don’t owe a long explanation.
Say what’s underneath ›What you might want to sayIt’s just that every time I see you I think about everything, and it’s a lot, and…
Porcupine · Observation, feeling, need, requestEvery “and” adds another thing to talk through. “I need room to move on” is the reason, in a few words.
What might land betterI need room to move on.
Hear how they feel
If they’re hurt, you can say back what you heard. Understanding them doesn’t mean changing your mind.
Understand before answering ›What you might want to sayYou’ll get over it.
Porcupine · Validate the feeling“You’ll get over it” brushes past the hurt. “I can tell that hurts” sees it, and “I’m sorry it does” is kind.
What might land betterI can tell that hurts. I’m sorry it does.
You don’t need them to agree
They may push back. You can hear that and still keep your answer.
Agreement isn’t the only good ending ›What you might want to sayOkay, fine, maybe we can try.
Porcupine · Validate the feeling“Okay, fine, maybe we can try” gives in to a no you meant. Hearing them out, and keeping your answer, is honest with you both.
What might land betterI hear that you see it differently. My answer is still the same.
Stay kind
Leave out digs about the past. A kind no is easier to accept, and easier for you both to live with later, especially if you share friends.
Respect, even when angry ›What you might want to sayHonestly, after how you acted, why would I?
Porcupine · No sarcasm, insults or contempt“After how you acted” is a dig at the past. “I wish you well” ends it on kindness.
What might land betterI wish you well.
If they keep asking
One clear answer is enough. After that, it’s fine not to reply, or to mute them for a while.
The common mistake
Saying maybe to soften it
“Maybe someday” or “I just need time” can feel gentler, but it leaves them waiting and asking again. A kind, clear no lets you both move on.
Honest and hearable ›If it doesn’t go the way you hoped
What they might say, and what you could say back.
If they sayI thought we could at least be friends.
You could sayI know. I’m sorry it’s not what you hoped. I need the distance.
If they sayCan we talk about it in person?
You could sayI’d rather not. I’ve thought about it, and my answer is the same.
If they sayFine. Whatever.
You could sayI understand. Take care.
Putting it together
The whole message, before and after.
What you might want to sayMaybe at some point? I just need some time I guess, idk.
Porcupine · Observation, feeling, need, requestA clear no, a short reason and a kind wish. It’s honest, and it doesn’t leave them waiting.
What might land betterI don’t want to stay friends. I need some distance to move on, and I’d rather be honest than leave you waiting. I wish you well.

Common questions
Do I have to give a reason?
No. One short sentence is kind if you want to give one, but “I need distance” is enough.
Should I say it in person or by text?
A text is fine, and often easier for both of you. Keep it short and kind.
What if we share friends?
Say you’ll keep things civil at shared events. Not being friends doesn’t mean being unkind.
