What a real apology says

I’m sorry I what you did, in plain words.

I know it how it affected them.

Next time, I’ll what you’ll do differently.

An explanation can come too, as its own sentence. Joined on with a “but,” it can take the apology back.

What one study found

In experiments, apologies with more of their key parts were judged more effective, and acknowledging responsibility mattered most.

The words that take an apology back ›

Can you apologize without saying sorry?

You can: “That was on me,” “I was wrong to…,” “I shouldn’t have…” What matters is owning what you did. Leaving the word out can read as dodging it, though, so say it if you can.

Common questions

What are the parts of a good apology?

Say what you did, own it without a “but,” say how it affected them, and, when it fits, what you’ll do differently or how you’ll make it right.

How do you apologize to your partner?

Say exactly what you did, without “if you felt” or “but.” Show you understand how it landed, and say what you’ll do next time. Then let them answer.

How do you apologize for a mistake at work?

Say what went wrong in one plain sentence, fix what you can right away, and say what you’ll do to keep it from happening again. You don’t need to grovel.

What if they don’t accept my apology?

Give them time. You can say once that you’re sorry and you’ll be there when they’re ready. Then let them decide.
